Home Security

Home security is an issue to which we all need to give considerable thought. The combined amount of money lost in the 2.1 million burglaries in 2003 was 3.5 billion dollars. According to the FBI, 65.8% of these burglaries occurred at personal residences. You need to understand how to formulate proper home security. This understanding includes recognizing how to deter a break-in, knowing what is included in a home security system, having an emergency plan in place--just in case, and being informed on how to prepare your home when you are on vacation.

Intruders' Worst Enemies

A number of things can be done to help to ensure home security. First and foremost, you need to understand how a burglar thinks. Light, time, and noise are an intruder's worst enemies. Your home won't be considered an easy target if a burglar has no option but to work in a well lit area, if the break-in will take a lot of time, and if he can't work in peace and quiet. Darkness and shade offer protection for an intruder and an excellent breach in your home security. Sure, privacy fences and ornate shrubbery look good and offer privacy for your home, but they also offer privacy for criminals. Consider trading a little extra privacy for a bit of added home security. Force any would-be burglar to confront a real enemy--light. Making robbing your home a noisy job can also up your home security. Installing a home security system with an alarm, mounted exterior lights, and door and window detectors will help dissuade an intruder.

Home Security Systems

A residence without a home security system is approximately three times more likely to be broken into than one without. Homeowners who have home security systems loose an average of $400 less in valuables in the event of a robbery. These facts prove that the installation of a home security system dissuades intruders and protects your home. Home security systems can include everything you could possibly need. Perimeter sensors on outside doors and windows, Timers for interior and exterior lights, Sirens, strobe lights and other alert mechanisms, Home security cameras for inside or outside use, Motion detectors in key inside areas, A control unit to interpret and respond to signals from the above and A connection to a central monitoring station which notifies the police of a breach in your home security. Solidify your overall sense of safety with a home security system. There aren't any good reasons for you to be fearful in your own home.

Consider the Basics

Reducing the risk of a break-in is merely making your home less inviting to burglars than the other homes in your neighborhood. Home security systems aren't the only way to guarantee home security; some basic steps can be taken to safeguard your home. If a burglar is delayed just a few minutes, he is apt to give up and try another less problematical home. Basic, ordinary home security equipment, such as padlocks and deadbolts, can discourage an intruder and stop him from entering your home. Forty percent of home invasions occur because a door or window was left unlocked. All exterior doors need to be made of either metal or solid hardwood and be a minimum of 1 3/4 inches thick.

Remember, even the best and most efficient lock, if it is placed in a weak door, will not stop a determined burglar. Key locks are the best type of home security for your windows, and they are available for and easily installed on all types of windows. These almost-effortless precautions can greatly increase your home security.

Essential Wine Accessories

You have decided to join the ranks of millions and become a wine enthusiast. You might be wondering to yourself what this entails exactly, and what sorts of gadgets and gizmos are you going to need to properly enjoy your wine. To be honest, there are few accessories that a person absolutely needs to enjoy their wine.

The first of the more important wine accessories is a bottle opener or corkscrew. There are many kinds of wine bottle openers on the market today. The most common corkscrews that people know about are either the winged style or waiters friends (sometimes called a wine key). A winged style looks exactly like the name states; it has a lever on each side that will rise when the center screw is inserted into the cork of a bottle. To remove the cork, the wings are lowered causing the screw and attached cork to rise with it and be removed from the bottle. A wine key is smaller and uses a single lever positioned onto the side of the bottle to provide leverage to remove the cork from the bottle. Both types of corkscrews are rather easy to find and usually start out selling for around $5.00. These openers in most cases can cause a cork to break in half if not pulled out correctly, or if the screw is not centered though the cork.

Lever pull corkscrews tend to be more expensive than winged or waiters friends, however, they are usually more user friendly. Ranging from $20.00 to $80.00, most lever models are designed with a clamp to hold the neck of the bottle in the corkscrew for ease of handling. Typically, the lever arm swings over the top and extracts the cork in a few very easy movements; ensuring removal is quick and effortless.

There is, however, another type of corkscrew that appeals to those looking for an effective and easy to use corkscrew but also one that is not overly expensive. Selling for roughly $15.00, the Vacuvin style corkscrew is my pick. Made from a heavy grade plastic, the Vacuvin opener is easy to use and only involves two steps: placing the opener on the bottle of wine and twisting the handle until the cork is released. This opener does not require a user to have super human strength, and I have yet to have a cork break during opening. The main reason the cork does not break is because the screw completely removes the cork from the bottle for you, there is no need to pull on the opener to remove the cork like some corkscrews require.

Once you have your bottle of wine open, the second must have accessory are wine glasses. Most people believe that there are certain glasses for certain wines; this is not necessarily the case. Usually a larger, broader bowl style wine glass is used for red wines with bigger bouquets, and smaller glasses for white wines to help concentrate the more subtle aromas. However, if space or budget are limiting you to one type of glass, many companies nowadays manufacture universal style glasses which are suitable to both red and white wine, and are inexpensive and attractively designed.

Another must have accessory for your collection is a wine stopper. Bottle stoppers come in a variety of colors, styles, and finishes to fit every taste and personality. Usually solid metal, metal and plastic, or metal and cork, wine stoppers are an excellent way to close an open bottle of wine to preserve it and protect it from air contamination for short periods of time.

A simple bottle stopper however, is not going to protect an open bottle of wine from the air that has already entered the bottle. Air trapped inside the bottle will cause a bottle of wine to expire much quicker than an unopened bottle, which is why I suggest using a vacuum bottle stopper system. A product such as the Vacuvin Concerto Wine Saver can greatly extend the life of an opened bottle of wine compared to a simple bottle stopper. Easy to use and inexpensive, all that a person does is place one of the specially designed bottle stoppers in the open bottle of wine and use the pump to draw the air out of the bottle. When the air is drawn out, the seal of the stopper is so strong the bottle can be held upside down or stored on its side without spilling. Starting at roughly $20.00, this type of bottle stopper is most effective for those looking to store open wine for longer periods of time.

Now you have your opener, glasses and bottle stoppers, what else do you need? A wine rack of course! Wine racks are available in a variety of styles and finishes to compliment any dcor. Styles include wall mounted, counter top, hanging and free standing wine racks. Finishes are varied as well and include wood and wrought iron. If interested in learning more about wine racks and what to look for in picking out the perfect rack, my article, How To Select The Finest Wine Rack For You Home is quite informative.

The list of wine accessories that are available on the market today can be quite exhausting, however it is important to keep in mind that not all accessories are essential to becoming a wine enthusiast, or simply to enjoy the pleasure of your wine. The most important to remember are the ones essential to drinking and storing a bottle of wine: a bottle opener, glasses, a bottle stopper and a wine rack. Once you have these, the other accessories become fun extras to collect to make your wine experience all the more enjoyable.

Does SEO and Web Design a Pair of Enemy?

The following scenario happens every day:

To many web designers, they want to draw visitors attention and develop many creativity features on the website. The Website owner feels very good and pay for the design. The website owner is likely to find that they need more search engine traffic and want to acquire some good search engine ranking. However, search engine optimizers tell them your website is not able to be indexed by search engines because there are too many creativity features, for example, excessive Javascript, full flash website, etc. To rectify the situation, you must remove all those elements. It creates a dilimmea for the website owner.

On one hand, he wants search engine traffic. On the other hand, he wants an interesting and appealing website. The website owner will ask "God, what can I do?"

Is it true that if you want top search engine ranking, your website must be a boring ,full of text website?

Probably No.

The following provides some recommendation to rectify the situation:

1. Flash Website

Search engines cannot "understand" flash but it does not mean that you cannot use Flash design. To solve the problem, you can use Flash header and put text under the flash header. An example can refer to website http://www.star-prototype-china.com company.

Nowadays, many flash has no real meaning to visitors and is for decoration purpose only. In this case, you can make a smaller flash header. If your flash header is trying to deliver a message, you can make a larger flash header to draw attention.

2. Interactive Scripts

You may want to add some interactive feature or picture swapping function on your website via Javascript/VBScript and etc. However, improper use of Javascript can hinder your website being indexed. For example, a garment software vendor embraced all hyperlinks by Javascript. As a consequence, search engines read their homepage only but did not index all their inner pages.

To ensure Javascript does not hinder search engine crawlers, I recommend you using external Javascript technique. Additionally, all important hyperlinks should be presented by basic HTML anchor tag.

3. Link Exchange Page

Some website owners refuse to exchange links with other websites because they think a link page makes their site very odd. How about making your link exchange page in this way? First, write a useful article and then assemble the links into the content. It makes the link page becomes useful for visitors and the links become more natural as if it is part of your content. If a link cannot be assembled into the content, it may mean that your content is very poor or the link partners actually is not relevant to your business. Why do you exchange links with them? Remember, search engines only value relevant 2-way links.

4. Content Management System

Website owners are keen to use content management system (CMS) to update their website becuase it is more easy and faster for them to update their websites.

However, many CMS generate webpages dynamically. It is widely known that search engines have difficulty to read or a tendency to ignore dynamically generated web pages.

I will recommend you must spend time to find a good CMS or a good web host providing CMS that can generate static webpages. Since Omega Plastics http://www.rapidmanufacture.co.uk starts to use this kind of CMS, all of your web pages can be indexed by search engines. In the past, only 1 web page can be read by search engines.

Business Process Outsourcing: The Perfect Solution for Your Business

The business process involves a lot of things. It will involve every aspect of your company in order to let your company operate smoothly and efficiently. It will involve business tasks, such as marketing, payrolls, help desks, management, human resources and more.

In the past, handling all these can be easy. But because of the growing demands in businesses today, you have to consider that it will be difficult for your company to cope up with todays competitiveness in the business world. Your company should maximize its resources in order to remain competitive with other companies.

This would be impossible or very expensive if you handle every business process involved. This is why many companies are now considering outsourcing their business process.

Business process outsourcing is one of the most popular and the most cost-efficient business solution that you can ever make. By contracting other companies to do a specific business task, you will be taking off extra work involved in your company and focus more on important aspects in running your business.

For example, making payrolls can be time consuming. It will involve computation of salaries of every employees and it will also involve taxes. You can hire your own employees to do the payroll for you. But, this will only add to the expenses that your company is making. Your target would be to decrease overall expense in your company. So, in order to save money, you have to outsource this particular business process to companies that accepts outsourcing.

Another example would be the help desk. Every company that manufactures products needs one. This particular business process is a way to communicate with your clients and know about their feedback in your products and it is also a way to assist your clients in case they encounter difficulty with your product. Creating a help desk department may prove to be too costly. It will involve everything from hiring additional employees and purchasing all the necessary tools you need to create an efficient and working help desk.

Today, there are available call center companies that will be able to provide a help desk for you. They will be the one who will answer your calls and generate reports regarding each caller and providing the reports for your company.

Companies regularly outsource their business process offshore, particularly to developing countries filled with qualified and talented individuals, such as China, Philippines, Mexico and India. These countries offer good quality services for your business process and they charge a very cheap rate for these services.

By outsourcing your companys business process or some of your companys business process, your company will be able to utilize its facilities to its maximum potential.

Through business process outsourcing you will be able to cut some operational costs and at the same time, let your company focus more on important factors in running your own business.

These are the reasons why you should consider outsourcing your business process to offshore companies.

Always keep in mind that you should first check the quality of an offshore outsourcing company first before you sign the contract in order to be sure that you will be getting your moneys worth. Remember this and it will pave the way to make your company the best in the industry.

Obtaining a Home Loan

Secrets of Securing A Home Loan

Four Typical Buyer Questions

1. How do I qualify for a loan?

Start by meeting with a lender. The lender will help you explore options for financing a home.

2. How do I select a lender?

Call two or three lenders.

Conduct a short telephone interview.

Make an appointment with the one that makes you feel most comfortable.

3. How does the lender determine my loan qualifications?

As general guide, you can purchase a home valued at two to three times your annual income.

The lender will also consider your savings and debts.

There are loan programs for first time buyers.

There are programs for buyers with credit issues.

Ask the lender what is best for you.

4. When should I call a Realtor?

Meet with a lender first to determine loan qualifications.

Get a pre-qualify letter.

Conduct a brief telephone interview with two or three Realtors.

Select the Realtor that makes you feel most comfortable.

Make an appointment.

You may be asked to sign a buyer agency agreement. It's fine to sign a short term agreement.

Before you sign a long term agreement, be sure you're comfortable with the Realtor.

Your first meeting with the Realtor

Be open minded. Make a list of features you'd like in your home:

How many bedrooms?

Do you need a garage?

How far do you drive to work?

Do you have animals?

... and so forth.

If you give the Realtor definite parameters; they can find a house for you.

Your first meeting with a lender

Bring this information with you: Salary and bonuses. Employment verification.

Two years of tax returns or W-2 forms.

Military history. Amount of dividends and interest income.

Other regular income such as alimony, child support etc.

Current bank statements both checking and savings.

Market value of stocks, bonds or Certificates of Deposit.

Face amount and cash value of life insurance policies.

Value of personal property and automobiles.

Balances and account numbers for loans, credit card balances and personal loans.

2. Adjustable/Variable Rate - the interest rate can change during the life of the loan.

3. Government Loans - VA and FHA.

4. Bridge/Swing Loans - Short term loans that are paid off quickly.

Within these categories are many variations designed to fit different needs. Which one is right for me?

Many factors enter into the selection of a loan:

Your financial circumstance.

Expectation of future financial changes.

How long you intend to hold the property.

How comfortable you are with the monthly payment.

How comfortable you are with the payment amount changing from time to time?

Discuss your preferences with the lender and the Realtor.

What does my loan payment include?

P includes payment on principle amount

I includes payment on the interest

T may include payments into an escrow account to pay taxes

I may include payments into an escrow account to pay insurance

How much do I need for a down payment?

Down payments vary. They can be anywhere from zero to twenty percent of the homes value.

Veterans and active military may obtain a loan with zero down.

What does the lender need to know about my credit?

If you have had credit problems, discuss them with your lender.

Bring written explanations of credit issues.

If problems have been corrected and credit reestablished, you'll probably be fine.

Credit problems no longer mean you're unable to get a loan.

How long will it take?

Your lender needs to verify all information.

The process may take from one to six weeks.

Within three business days after application the lender must provide you with a "Good Faith Estimate", which is the amount of closing costs you'll be expected to pay and an estimated monthly payment.

Stay in touch with your Realtor and Lender.

Do not be afraid to ask questions.

Home buying can be unnerving; ask the professionals what to expect.

Drinking Tea

The second most consumed beverage behind water is tea. Interestingly enough the 3,200,000 tones of tea produced worldwide come from only one plant species, named "camellia sinensis." But how a plant becomes a beverage? Tea is made by steeping processed leaves, buds, or twigs of the tea bush in hot water for a few minutes, a great variety of tea tastes, aromas and colors can excite even the more skeptical drinker. If you do like tea drinking, but simply never had the opportunity to learn more about it beyond the fact that you enjoy it, you should know that there are thousands of kinds of tea offered on today's market. Shades in flavor derive from the region of cultivation and the method of processing the tea leaves. It is the processing techniques that produce the four simple tea categories are considered the art of tea making. In its most basic form, processing is the taking of the raw green leaves and deciding whether or not, and how much oxidation (or fermentation) should take place before drying them out. Oxidation is the reaction of the enzymes contained in tea leaves when they are broken, bruised or crushed.

The first category is that of black tea. Black tea is nothing more than the leaves of the camellia sinensis after being exposed to 8-24 hours of open air. After the leaves are picked up they are spread out to let the water they contain evaporate. You have probably witnessed it happening to a flower that is left without being watered. The foliage curls up and begins to dry. After this part of the process, the tea leaves are balled into rolls that encourage oxidization. When fully oxidized, the leaves turn into a rich black color. Tea producers then put the tea leaves into the final drying period before sorting and packaging them.

Oolong tea is another tea category and is considered to be the most difficult of the four types of teas to process. The best way to describe oolong tea is that it is somewhere in between green and black tea. This is because the leaves are only partially oxidized during the processing. As with black tea, the leaves are spread out to dry for 8-24 hours, but after that, they are tossed about in a basket in order to create a bruising and partial exposure to the air. The final step involves steaming the leaves, which neutralizes the enzymes in the tea and prevents further oxidization.

Green teas, like white teas, are closer to tasting like fresh leaves of grass that the other two tea categories. This type of tea is also lower in caffeine and has higher antioxidant properties. The whole process of creating green tea revolves around preventing oxidization from taking place in the leaves. Though the tea leaves are sometimes laid out to dry for a few hours, then, in order to neutralize the enzymes and prevent further oxidation, the leaves are steamed or pan fried. It is this very technique which results in the preservation of the enzymes which have recently become the focus of medical research. After steaming, the leaves are rolled up, still quite green in color.

Finally, white tea has recently become a popular item in the west as it is the least processed tea and thus tastes the most like fresh leaves or grass. White tea is made of the little buds of the tea plant. Again like green tea, white tea is steamed or pan fried to prevent any kind of oxidization, and great care is taken to avoid bruising or crushing the tea. The dried buds have a silver-like appearance because the tiny white hairs of new growth are still present.

Vacation In Mexico

Mexico, our neighbor down south is the perfect place for your next vacation. With the Gulf Coast on one end and the Caribbean on another, it is a favorite for many tourists.

Mexico is a study of contrasts of ancient and modern, aside from the landscape, there is the blend of cultures from the indigenous peoples to the cosmopolitan cities and plenty of beaches choose from.

The country spans about 1964,375 square kilometers. It is divided in six regions each with their own attractions for the visitor.

Northern Mexico-Dunes, Desert and Sierra Madre

For those who want a little bit of nature and adventure you should head to northern Mexico. Northern Mexico is made of the states of Durango, Nuevo Leon, Sonora, Tamaulipas, Chihuahua, Coahuila and Zacatecas. There are the mountains of Sierra Madre that provide you with wonderful views of sun rising and setting.

If you like camping and would like to bring back a collection of beautiful pictures of nature you could go to the Cuatro Ciengas desert in Coahuila. There you would not be disappointed with the spectacular views and you must make time to enjoy the natural hot springs.

In Zacatecas, you can go through the streets and see a little bit of Mexicos colonial past. There are many building that are still standing from the period of the very first Spanish settlers. One such landmark is Cerro de la Bufa. And Chihuahua is home to the ruins at Paquime and many collections of traditional art from the Raramuri Indians.

In Guayamas, Bahia de Kino, San Carlos and Puerto Penasco, you can find a lot more features, including zones of archeological interest and more beaches.

Central Mexico

Starting from the northern high plateau to the tip of Sierra Madre range down south, this region has plenty for a person to see in terms of culture and scenery. You have Mexico City, with amazing examples of architecture like the old buildings in the Historic Center and the old world style of Basilica of Guadalupe.

You can visit the many archeological sites open to tourists. There are a number of lakes, rivers, waterfalls, springs, forests and caverns to go to. And if you want to activities, plenty are offered. You can do cave exploring, rafting, scuba diving, nature observing, and rock climbing to name a few.

Tips for International Travel

International travel has a few extra rules to follow. To insure a quality travel experience and to avoid trouble, know these tips.

Always bring your ATM card with you. You will be charged a transaction fee by your bank each time you withdraw cash from an ATM machine, but this is your best bet. Just remember to withdraw a few larger amounts as opposed to daily, smaller amounts to avoid numerous bank charges. Most banks charge $1.50 - $5.00 per transaction. Also, depending on the kind of ATM card you have, you may be able to use it in restaurants/stores if the place of business accepts Visa or Mastercard.

When used as a credit card, it will automatically come out of your checking account. In this case, you won't be charged the bank's normal transaction fee. You must remember that many small villages do not have ATM machines, so plan accordingly. Never go to the exchange store fronts on the street or you will be charged a hefty fee. Also, you should bring the name and phone number (the direct line) of your banker just in case you need funds made available while abroad.

Credit cards are another good option since you will get that current day's exchange rate when you receive your bill upon your return home. Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants and shops. It is a good idea to bring two different types (Visa or MasterCard and American Express) in case one is not accepted. Keep in mind that most credit card companies charge an additional fee for using credit cards internationally which is usually between 2-3% so check with your credit card company prior to your departure.

Bring more film than you think you will need since film is usually more expensive overseas. Always check the expiration of any film bought overseas.

Bring your passport and make sure it hasn't expired. Before departure, make a copy of your passport and airline tickets and keep in a separate place.

In Italy, you can also change money in the Italian Post Office. They often have better exchange rates and are open Saturday mornings.

I do not advise bringing traveler's checks. I have found that many restaurants and stores do not accept them because of currency fluctuation but you can exchange them at hotel front desks and banks.

Always bring comfortable, "already-broken in" footwear. Don't make the mistake of bringing brand new shoes! Never bring high heels - they will certainly get stuck in the cobblestones in the small villages. Remember, many of these European villages are very hilly with rocky textures.

Before I pack, I make a habit of checking the weather forecast of the country to which I will be traveling. Also, I bring a light jacket and a small umbrella.

For those die hard shoppers, always bring an extra, collapsible suitcase for those precious purchases. You dont want to break your new possessions by placing smashing them into your packed suitcase.

Expanding on the previous note, if you wish to purchase art/home decor while away, always bring the measurements of that area of your home (i.e. table measurements for tablecloths, bed measurements for linens, etc.)

Don't forget your laptop hardware, chargers (for cell phone, digital camera, etc.) and converters (hairdryer, electric shaver, etc.).

If you don't have a cell phone, remember to bring your home telephone company's Access Codes to be sure you get the best rate in calling home. (Each country has a different access code so call your phone company).

If you want to check your email while away and don't have a laptop, remember to bring your email access website information (i.e. www.mail2web.com - you will need your username and password). I always bring my Blackberry to Europe since the service provider has international access. Also, bring your address book - you may want to send postcards!

Laundry services are very expensive overseas so if you want to pack lightly, bring some Woolite to rinse out clothes in the sink. Also, make sure you bring an extra pair of sunglasses.

To avoid over packing, check with your hotel to see if they have a hairdryer and an iron/ironing board.

Always pack a swimsuit - even if it's winter, you'll never know if there might be a heated pool or Jacuzzi!

Use village names as landmarks as opposed to route numbers. By taking these precautions and preparations, you can spend your international vacation enjoying yourself and the surroundings without worrying about the little things.

Barbacoa Grilled Sheep From Mexico

Barbacoa the name itself sounds as if it is time to celebrate. It is an open fire grilling process where a whole sheep is made to roast slowly so that each fleshy part acquires that flabbergasting taste of barbeque bonfire. However, the sheep can also be grilled traditionally in a pit covered with leaves. This barbeque specialty was developed in Mexico just after the Spanish conquest and it was referred to as Barbacoa de cabeza.

Regional discrimination in the art of cooking

In U.S, some portions of the head of the cow become the item to be grilled. In Northern Mexico, again it is the head of the cow, though goat meat or Cabrito is more preferred here. Lamb is the choice of the Central Mexicans and it is Cochinita Pibil (pit-style pork) in traditional Yucatan gastronomy dictionary.

Barbacoa and Barbeque

The word barbeque is an adoption from the word barbacoa. In both cases, meats are cooked following a proper grilling or roasting process. The flesh is allowed to roll well over the grilling equipment to allow the heat touch every part of the fleshy item. This helps to build that simmering and spicy experience which often makes you feel as if there is no end to an appetite.

South Texas Style Beef Barbacoa

Five brothers together make one palatable dish. Yes thats the way its done. Garlic powder, black pepper, dried oregano, chili powder and salt all mixed well and rubbed thoroughly and evenly on all sides of the meat. Your requirement is three quarts boiling water in a water pan, which allows the beef to be exposed to smoke at least for four hours and at a temperature between 225 to 275 degrees. Once you are to change the boiling water of the pan. After this is over, keep watch that the internal temperature of the beef does not exceed 160 170 degrees.

The next step would be to lay the beef in a foil-baking pan, seal it well with heavy-duty aluminum cover, and carefully place it in a preheated oven at a temperature of 325 degrees. The baking should continue for one hour and forty-five minutes. After everything is done just test the meat. You will see that the flesh tends to fall apart from the bone - yes, proper broiling method can really make the meat soft.

Now, it is the time to serve. The meat is chopped and shred into small pieces and then dished up with guacamole, salsa, and hot tortillas.

The queen of the Mexican bistro

Outside Mexico City, there are several places serving palatable barbacoa de borrego (lamb barbeque) and other provincial cooking varieties in a dozen of unbounded restaurants. Arroyo, one of Mexicos famous restaurants is noted for its supply of pit-roasted barbacoa de borrego and consomme de Borrego. Such dishes are well complimented by soup made from the drippings of the roasting lamb and sheep.

Mexican barbacoa a Mexico magnificence that can make the heat of an occasion rise to an extent when the rest of the party dance wildly with the pulsating music. When hot barbeque accompanies the heat of an occasion, nothing else is required to make the party more enjoying.

Sugar Ray Leonard: Magic in the Boxing Ring

Sugar Ray Leonard is remembered in the sporting world as one of, if not the most; flashy, exciting and elegant fighters the sport of boxing has seen.

Born Ray Charles Leonard on May 17, 1956, in Wilmington, North Carolina, named after the singing legend Ray Charles. Leonard adopted the alias Sugar early on in his career upon the approval of Sugar Ray Robinson- with the label being suitable as Leonard, like his namesake, was sweet as sugar inside the boxing ring.

Leonard had a fine amateur career, winning three Golden Gloves, two AAU championships, a gold medal at the Pan-American Games in 1975 and culminating in an Olympic gold medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada. Leonard finished his amateur career with a record of 145-5, with 75 knock outs.

Upon winning the gold medal, Leonard told sports announcer and reporter Howard Cosell he was quitting boxing for good, and was planning to attend college. However, Leonards father became ill, and with his family in need of money Leonard decided to turn professional. Muhammad Alis head trainer, Angelo Dundee, was hired to be Leonards trainer, and Janks Morton and Dave Jacobs as co-trainers, with lawyer Mike Trainer completing the team.

Leonard made his professional debut on February 5, 1977, against Luis Vega at the Baltimore Civic Centre. In a fight that was nationally televised- and in which Leonard made $40,000 from- Vega lost a 6 round unanimous decision.

Under the guidance of his shrewd advisors, Leonard decided to remain independent by not signing a long term deal with a promoter, therefore having the flexibility to do business with whom he chose. As a result, Leonard gained popularity by reaching a wide audience demographic, with fights being broadcast on NBC, CBS, HBO and ABC.

Leonard won his first 25 fights, and in the process defeated notable names in: Floyd Mayweather, Daniel Aldo Gonzalez, Pete Ranzany and Andy Price. After capturing the NABF welterweight title, Leonard received the opportunity to fight WBC welterweight world champion, Wilfred Benitez. Despite the importance of the bout, Benitez preparation was poor, with his handlers not happy with Benitez volume of training. In a closely fought contest, Leonard stopped Benitez in round 15 via a TKO with only 6 seconds left in the fight.

After making a successful first defense against Dave Boy Green, Leonard signed to fight Panamanian tough-man Roberto El Cholo Duran. In what turned out to be back to back fights, Leonard lost the title against Duran, having being drawn into fighting El Cholo predominantly on the inside, to Duran preference, only to reclaim it in the return match after employing a cocktail of skillful outside fighting and gamesmanship. Duran was visibly unhappy with Leonards tactics in the second bout, and will be remembered for the no mas call to end the fight.

Sugar Ray then defended the title against Larry Bonds, after which he claimed the WBA light middleweight title against Ayub Kalule after moving up in weight. Whilst Leonard had moved up, soon to be arch rival Thomas Hearns was tearing apart the welterweight division after claiming the WBA world title by knocking out Pipino Cuevas. A fight was set for both the WBA and WBC welterweight titles between Leonard and Hearns, to be staged at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, USA.

After weighing in at 154lb(welterweight limit 147lb), and throwing fewer right hands in 14 rounds as he usually would in one, Hearns seemed over trained. Hearns controlled the early rounds with his long reaching jab. But in the middle rounds Leonard worked inside Hearns lead and hurt him with left hooks. The fight was stopped in the 14th round, with Leonard becoming the universally recognised welterweight champion.

After making a defense of his welterweight title against Bruce Finch, Leonard was diagnosed with having a detached retina in his left eye, and underwent surgery to repair the problem. In November 1982, after 6 months of deliberation, Leonard announced his retirement.

Leonard made a one fight comeback in 1984 against Philadelphias Kevin Howard, but was put on the canvas for the first time in his career. Leonard went onto win the fight however decided to once again retire. In May 1986, Leonard shocked the sports world once again when it was announced he would fight middleweight champion Marvelous Marvin Hagler. The bout gained a huge amount of interest, and was billed as a Super Fight. Many felt with Leonards time out of boxing, the injury, jump in weight and the fact that Hagler was an all time great middleweight, that Leonard stood little chance of being victorious. Hagler started the fight heavy favorite.

In a bout which saw Sugar Ray fight virtually in entirety on the outside- and clinching when forced inside- Leonard received a controversial split decision. As a result of Leonards sniping tactics, combined with Haglers move to fight in an orthodox stance early in the fight, it was a difficult fight to establish a clear winner. Leonard announced his retirement- once again- one month after the bout.

On November 7, 1988 Leonard came back and fought Donny Lalonde for both the WBC light heavyweight, and newly created WBC super middleweight titles- a bout which Leonard would win via way of 9th round technical knock out.

In 1989, Leonard fought two old rivals: a return match with Hearns, and a completed trilogy with Duran. In the Hearns fight Leonard was knocked down twice, however the final decision was a 12 round draw. Against Duran, Leonard won a sedate 12 round unanimous decision- a fight in which Duran had a very low punch output.

Leonard stayed out of the ring during 1990, but came back in February, 1991, to challenge WBC world junior middleweight champion Terry Norris. Past his best, Leonard lost a lopsided unanimous decision. Once again, post bout, Leonard announced his retirement.

Leonard went through difficult times during the retirement stints, having divorced wife Juanita, and admitting to a cocaine and alcohol problems which he fought hard to overcome. Leonard remarried Bernadette Robi, daughter of famous composer Paul Robi.

In 1997, at age 40, Leonard launched his final boxing comeback against former lightweight world champion Hector Camacho. In the ring, Sugar Ray was a shadow of his former self, and was stopped in 5 rounds. Later that year, Leonard was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.

For a period, Leonard headed a boxing promotional company and he is now the face of the TV reality boxing series, The Contender.

Family Ski Vacation

Whether your family lifestyle is a little extreme, or more serene, a family ski vacation is a great way to have fun and bond with your kids. Family ski vacations can be as wild or as subdued as you like, and with options available for all budgets, it's easy to plan a winter getaway for your clan.

Once you've all agreed that a family ski vacation is the way to go, you can start planning the details. Skiing isn't as expensive as you might think, and there are many great resorts that cater to families with money-saving packages available. The biggest problem your family will have is choosing a location.

Most ski resorts have websites, so begin your planning process online. Assess the various resort sites and compare the accommodations to decide which resort will be most suited to your family's needs. Don't choose a resort based on one or two attributes, but consider many different points. If someone in your family will need ski instruction, look for resorts that offer skiing lessons by qualified instructors. Don't make the mistake of choosing a resort where one or more of your family members won't be able to join in the fun because they're not good skiers. Many resorts offer on-site instruction but some don't, so take the time to research and choose carefully.

To make the best choice for your ski vacation, compare the available lifts, slopes and trails. The destination you choose should offer something to please every member of your family. If the resort only caters to beginners, more advanced skiers will quickly become bored. If you have a snowboarder in your group, and there are no snowboarding parks or terrain, that snowboarder will not be happy. Some resorts cover all of the winter sports bases, so shop around for a place that will cover all of your family's interests.

Lodging is another very important consideration. Remember, you're going to be on vacation, so you want to feel comfortable day and night. You'll often find a hotel right at the base of the slopes, but it may not necessarily be the best or most affordable place to stay. Search out all available lodging options in your destination area, and choose the one the fits your budget and suits your family. If the accommodations you choose are located away from the slopes, make sure that you arrange to have easy access to transportation each day.

Even if everyone in your family is an avid skier, you'll likely want to explore other activities while on your family ski vacation. Find out if the resorts on your list offer other activities. Sleigh rides, dog sledding, snowmobiling, snowshoeing horseback riding and even tobogganing can all offer a fun twist to liven up your week at the slopes. Not all resorts offer additional activities, so be sure to ask before you book. Check into winter activities at the resort, as well events taking place in and around the town you'll be staying.

A family ski vacation is a great way for kids and parents to get active and have fun. Compare resorts, be sure you find the accommodations and amenities you need, and create a family ski vacation you'll all remember for a very long time.

Santa is Always the News

We all know Santas story by now. He was originally a bishop back in the day, and after he died he became known as Saint Nicholas, or Saint Nick for short. And even way back then, before Christmas became a major holiday, the anniversary of his death was a day to celebrate by giving out gifts. But most of us dont know that Saint Nick actually had a bad rap for a while, and that is actually how he got all of the other names we know him by today.

During the time of great change in the Christian Church known as the Protestant Reformation, which occurred in the 1500s, the famous Martin Luther declared that all good Christians should stop celebrating saints. For the devout followers of Luther, that meant also stopping the celebration of Saint Nick, no matter how fun the gift giving had become.

But of course, not all Christians stopped celebrating Saint Nick, not even all of the Protestants. Instead of stopping the celebration, they crafted a plan to enjoy the Saint Nick holiday in secret. This is when Saint Nick became known in England as Father Christmas. In Germany, people referred to Santa as Christmas Man, and the Dutch created the name Sinterklass.

About this time, a large majority of Dutch settlers moved to New Amsterdam in Americawhat would later become New Yorkand brought their celebration of Sinterklass with him. Americans caught on to the idea, and tried to pronounce his name right. But instead, what came out was Santa Claus.

However, Santa Claus did not hit the big time until the author of Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving, got wind of Santa Claus and promoted him the American press. This happened in the early 1800s, when Washington Irving wrote a story called the A History of New York, in which he went into great detail about a man called Sinterklass. This Saint Nick was fat and short, wore a funny costume, and would travel around on the Eve of Saint Nicolas on a horse.

The idea of jolly gift-giving man caught on in the American press. Another writer, the poet Clement Clark Moore, wrote a poem called A Visit from St. Nicolas, which is better known as, The Night Before Christmas. It was Moore who made Saint Nick a jolly old elf who flies around the night in a magical sleigh powered by eight flying reindeer. We all know the names of those reindeer, right? Well, Moore also included them in his poem.

Americans would get their best images of Santa Claus in the magazines of the late 1800s, when the cartoonist Thomas Nast put out his own visions of Saint Nick in Harpers Weekly. For Nast, Santa was a bigger man with a big fat belly, who wore a red suit lined with fur and a big leather belt. Nast also started drawing images of Santas workshop in the North Pole, and Santa using a list to keep track of his kids who were naughty and nice.

Of course, these are all the images of Santa that we use today in the newspapers, in cartoons, and on TV. Or should we say, perhaps, images of Sinterklass?

Accounting Made Easy with Small Business Credit Cards

Jaded by a routine 9 to 5 job? Stifled by your thankless work? Have you bartered your dreams away for an emotionally unsatisfying life? If you have finally decided to wrench yourself free from your shackles, it is time to take stock financially and see how small business credit cards can actually help you in starting your and running your own business.

When you set out on this exciting new journey, you are likely to face a number of challenges, and with them, teething troubles. You can avoid such stress if you make good use of the various tools specially designed to assist entrepreneurs in their ventures. Small business credit cards are by far one of the most important accounting instruments made available to you.

Small Business Credit Cards are Valuable Accounting Tools

One of the major problems that small businesses face is detailed accounting of their monetary transactions. Finances of any business must be immaculate and readily presentable, and if you haven not done such accounting before, be prepared for a tough task.

Usually, a small business suffers from insufficient manpower. Business owners assume various roles and are often under tremendous pressure to perform efficiently in a frenetic race against time to meet deadlines. Thus, opportunity for human error creeps in. But when it comes to finances, even the minor errors can spell disaster for your new baby.

Small business credit cards offer an opportunity to ease this tension and minimize errors. Whenever a transaction is done through a small business credit card, it is automatically reflected in a monthly statement. Your books can then be easily updated on time with the help of these all-inclusive statements showing specific details. A thorough account of all purchases can easily be maintained in this manner.

Managing Your Business with Small Business Credit Cards

Small business credit cards generally offer features such as online banking and round-the-clock technical assistance. This is especially handy when it comes to bill payment, downloading data, viewing expense reports, redeeming points, and overall maintenance and monitoring of transactions.

Add-on Benefits of a Small Business Credit Card

Credit card companies have bettered the deal by offering additional benefits on small business credit cards. As a business owner, you cannot afford to ignore these benefits. For example, obtaining incrementally higher credit limits can provide you with additional liquidity when required and more opportunities to expand your business products and services.

A small business credit card can also have a cash back offer that entitles the cardholder to rebates on purchases made with collaborating businesses. The refund may be reflected on the customers account statement or just be provided by way of a periodic rebate check. Some cards also come with airline and travel reward incentives and you can even earn frequent flyer miles with your purchases that can also be redeemed for discounts and rewards.

Small business credit cards have revolutionized the way fledgling businesses approach finance. Card statements that are usually made available online can help remove tedious accounting paperwork. Small business credit cards empower even those with the most rudimentary knowledge of accounting, freeing them up to focus on growing their respective businesses.

Crystal Lake Cave in Iowa - A Great Vacation and Travel Destination

Iowa has some beautiful places that are wonderful vacation destinations. One of the must see places is Crystal Lake Cave. There is an interesting story behind this location. Back in 1868 lead miners were looking for a lead vein and they drilled 40 feet into the ground. And although they were not successful in finding the lead they had hoped for they did find something else even more amazing. What they found was Crystal Lake Cave. Although the cave was discovered for many years it was not open to the public until 1932. Bernard Markus, one of the original miners, played a role in getting the cave open to the public and it finally became so after his death.

While the miners were digging they found quite a few different types of gems and minerals that are on display in the gift shop. There is no other show cavern like Crystal Lake Cave and this is the longest a cave has been "alive" in Iowa. The cave is underground and continues to be one of the most amazing places to visit in Iowa. The tour of the cave takes about half an hour to 45 minutes and it is an adventure like none other you have ever taken. A tour guide will lead you so that you get the most out of the adventure. Keep in mind that no matter what the temperature is outside it will be quite cool in Crystal Lake Cave and the year round temperature is usually around 52 degrees Fahrenheit.

The cave is open from 9 am to 5 pm on weekends in May and daily in June, July and August from 9 am until 6 pm. In September the cave is open from 11 am until 5 pm on weekdays and 9 am until 5 pm on weekends. The cave is open through mid October from 11 am until 5 pm on weekdays and 9 am until 5 pm on weekends. The rest of the year the cave is closed for winter. Prices for adults are $10 and $5 for kids four to 11. Kids under four are free and senior citizens receive a 10% discount. Group pricing is available. The cave is located three miles south of Dubuque, Iowa and 20 minutes from Galena, Illinois.

How To Combat The Worldwide Skills Shortage

Introduction

In the past decade, we have experienced a steady erosion of skills amongst people working in various industries, professions and businesses. This includes many large industries like chemicals, petrochemicals, oil refining and the like. This is a very provocative statement which will, no doubt be hotly contested by some people, but nevertheless it is true, like it or not. This is the reason why one often hears a cry amongst HR professionals, business leaders and management gurus of a worldwide talent crunch. A side effect of this skill erosion has been an increase in salaries and benefits in many companies to those employees who have retained or enhanced their skills ( as contrasted with the pay cuts seen everywhere not so long ago), as well as concrete steps to stem attrition at all levels. This paper attempts to provide an insight into the issue as well as provide a solution for companies and businesses that are suffering from this problem.

History of the problem

The problem of the skills shortage can be directly attributed to three reasons. The first and primary reason is the Downsizing effect. The second reason is Demographics. The third reason is that not enough young workers are entering the workforce in some sectors. We will study these one by one and also attempt to provide a solution.

Downsize em all!

In the mid to late nineties, there was a wave of a new management fad that cut across all sectors, industries and professions. This fad was the concept of downsizing and rightsizing. Coupled with its cousin of outsourcing, it played a dominant role in creating todays problem. Like many other temporary quick fixes, it only proved the old adage , that the solution to a problem can create a bigger problem.

Until the nineties, typically employees in most companies, shared between them, a vast body of knowledge, that was the real driver of the growth and profitability of the business. This was never acknowledged or measured as such by top management seriously. Thus this intellectual property of the business was never cared for properly. Merely having a physical location (like an office or a factory) and machines (or plants or computers or other physical assets) and money in the bank, does not make a business. The business requires skilled people, in various functions, having diverse skills, to glue it all together. They co-ordinate the people and assets, use the money productively and thus create value. This key insight was lost on the swashbuckling managers and cost-focussed bean counters of the cutting nineties (a term similar to the swinging sixties, but more sinister), who looked askance at people, mocked them as mere cost centers and concentrated on cutting them out of the business.

No doubt that every business does acquire some flab and bureaucracy as it grows older, but this wave of downsizing threw out the baby along with the bathwater. This scored the managers of those days some brownie points and lifted the bottom lines of those companies during the recessionary times by some percentage points. Not to speak of the increase in their own bottom lines because of the bonuses and stock options. But then, when the economy picked up again, this downsizing process left the companies with gaping skills shortages. This left companies with little or no resources to again expand capacities, regain their market positions, introduce new products or even to take care of existing products.

This opportunity cost has been never seriously measured by any of the management gurus, to my knowledge.

Demographics

In Europe the average age of the population has now increased. This fact is well known and publicized often. However, what is not emphasized enough, is that the aging is far from uniform. In some industries, like chemicals manufacturing, the average age of a typical plant operator is more than 50! Besides, because of the decrease of retirement age by the industry (in its cost-cutting era), it means hundreds of these operators would retire at the same time, permanently cutting off their knowledge of so many years of industries and processes. There wont be enough operators to go around since this age profile cuts across many chemical companies in the western world. Hence, once these operators exit the workforce, finding replacements wont be easy. Ditto for other large manufacturing sectors.

Bad PR and Uncool industries & sectors

Professional PR managers say, that there is no such thing as bad PR, any publicity is good, if it generates interest amongst a community to discuss it. While this may be true for businesses like software or mobile phones, bad PR has badly affected the chemical industry, by painting it as eco-unfriendly, polluting and bad smelling. This is simply untrue with respect to many chemical industries today, who have far less pollution & environmental problems today. In fact most of the problems of pollution and warming in cities can be attributed to vehicular pollution rather than industrial pollution. However, whos listening? To the youngsters graduating out of college the chemical industry is simply uncool. There also do not seem to be many efforts at correcting this view from the manufacturers of chemicals. Besides, the memory of the downsizing campaigns is still fresh and nobody wants to join the chemical industry, IT industry or other manufacturing industries, to make a career. They would rather join a TV channel, become a Radio Jockey, or go into the hospitality business or perhaps even try stock broking or merchant banking. This "bad PR" has also hit the IT industry in the US, where not many young people are enrolling in Computer Science courses in universities, because of the fear of not getting jobs due to outsourcing. Thus this leads to further shortages from the IT businesses point of view.

The effect of combined factors

The effect of all the factors in combination above, has been a dramatic shortage of skilled people in the industry. This creates not just problems of paying more for available skills or overtime, but the fact that a wrong operation because of lack of skills and / or training can result in a disaster, in case of a chemical company, affecting entire communities, not just individuals or companies. Wrong operations in other professions like the IT industry can have also serious undesirable consequences, which may also be catastrophic (imagine a software code with many bugs in your banking application software).

The solution to the problem

The only solution to the problem, is by spending more time, attention and money on training programs that enhance the skills of the workforce in general, refresh old skills that workers have and bring up the skills of the freshers or semi skilled workers who join the workforce, all in a short time. This can be achieved, only by employing innovative training solutions. The old training technique (which is hundreds of years old, by the way), can no longer be used effectively in todays situation.

We are talking about classroom based training here. When somebody says training to a manager, the first thing that comes to his/her mind is Oh! My God! Not again! I am already short of xx workers and they ask me to spare somebody for training!!. This is because many of us still associate the word training with classroom training.

This is of course not correct. The world has moved ahead and training can now be imparted online, at home, in the garden or on the beach. It is now ON DEMAND learning, thanks to the proliferation of the Internet, easy availability of PCs/laptops and mobile phones.

We are talking of e-learning and m-learning here. Besides being flexible, it can be imparted in bite sized chunks, easily digestable, over a period of time. Repeating it hardly costs anything, whereas a classroom refresher training directly doubles the cost.

An added benefit is that, for young entrants to the workforce, it gives them learning on platforms that they are already used to and comfortable with (i.e on laptops, PDAs and Mobile phones). It somehow enhances the cool factor and removes the image of the industry as staid, conventional and old-world.

Topics for learning

Previously there were not many courses with ready made topics with e-learning providers. Typically, most e-learning service providers used to provide custom-made, bespoke learning packages to individual companies. While this approach had its benefits, the downside is, that the courses are suitable only for the company for which they were designed, leading to a very high cost per user, nullifying the low cost advantages of e-learning.

However, now newer companies like Abhisam Software have e-learning titles on topics that are suitable to many process industries. Examples include Hazardous Area Instrumentation and Gas Monitors. Since these are standard courses, they can be offered at a much lower cost than the earlier custom designed courses. Besides, if the number of learners is sufficiently large (say about 50 or more) then some degree of customization of these courses is also possible, again at a low cost.

Summary

Due to historical reasons, there has been a skill shortage in the industries and businesses, all over the world.

This skill shortage will only worsen, as seniors retire and not enough youngsters enter the workforce in large numbers.

If somehow more youngsters do enter the workforce in large numbers, the cost of training them, using the traditional training methods will be prohibitively expensive and unviable. Also not enough technical training personnel are available, to offer one-on one training.

Using newer education technologies like e-learning and m-learning, knowledge and expertise, can be imparted quickly and precisely, to those people whose skills need to be developed. This can be done at a fraction of the cost of traditional learning. Thus new recruits can be trained effectively.

Using standard topics and templates for learning, reduces the cost of the training further. Customization if required, however is always possible. In most cases, even with the cost of customization added, the total cost of training using these modern methods is lower than the cost of traditional training.

Additionally, e-learning provides managers with a way to track training remotely, because most e-learning systems will provide test scores, record time spent on each module or page, log the students activity and provide very detailed measurements, that can be used to improve the training. Traditional methods hardly provided any data, save for a feedback form at the end which students themselves filled in, which then lies forgotten in some dusty file, forever.

E-learning and m-learning does not mean merely reproduction of classroom training materials into soft copies and viewing them on a PC or a mobile. Companies like Abhisam Software provide e-learning that is media rich, with lots of pictures, Flash based animations (that simulate a process or show the working of a machine or a phenomenon), interactive simulations (that include the learner in the Flash exercises), real-life video clippings of events or procedures and online assessments. This kind of rich-media training is simply not comparable with the traditional classroom based training. The courses are designed with the help of several subject matter experts, Instructional designers, animation and user-interface experts.

Thus the worldwide shortage of skills can be addressed by using training to enhance workers' skills, cross train workers, enhance the skills of semi skilled workers or freshers. This is possible only if company managements focus their attention on effective e-learning and m-learning philosophies. It is by far the best solution to bridge the skills shortage and gain competitive advantage.

The most important accessories on your wedding day, apart from your partner of course, are the wedding rings that you choose, as well as the partner you pick, have to be well thought out decisions for life. You don't want to be stuck with a ring that makes your hand dive for your pocket eveytime people are around, do you?

For women's or men's wedding rings, you have a wide variety of choice. If have a big wallet, then diamond wedding rings has to be the ultimate in his and hers rings.

The rings that you choose are not only an important part of your wedding but also these rings are a lasting statement of your commitment to each other and a symbol of your unity. Therefore you should go for rings that are timeless and good quality.

The style of your ring is obviously an important factor. It is not like the wedding dress or suit which gets worn for the wedding and then put in the back of the cupboard to gather mothballs for the rest of their existence. The ring is hopefully, for the rest of your life.

Just think before the wedding, you meticulously cross examined every possible participant that came for a shot at being your life partner. You were merciless in your checking, not one nook or cranny was left unchecked, yet when it comes to the rings, you will settle for whatever you see first.

So..What's the first thing to look for in a good ring?.......Style.

Will you go for the traditional band, which has lasted this many weddings so far, and i am sure it will last many more..Or maybe that is a little to plain for you, so how about a ring with a beaded edge or even a personalized inscription? well, if that is not flashy enough for you, then why not go the whole hog and go for a ring that has channel set diamonds? the choices are almost endless.

Now you know what style of ring you want, what material is it going to be made of? Gold, silver or platinum?

A gold ring is the tried and tested choice for eons, and it works, so why to try to fix it. This metal symbolizes warmth because of its color and is aptly suited for its use. This metal comes in differing qualities and if you are a person who uses their hands allot, than you may want to consider a 14k or 18k rather than the softer 22 or 24k.

How about a white gold ring? Very new age and stylish with the added bonus of looking like platinum but not hurting your wallet like platinum. Then of course, you can have platinum rings. This is the hardest of the precious metals, making it a long lasting symbol of your devotion. But because it is not mixed with lower grade metals like gold rings are, it will more expensive than gold.

Now to add the topping on the cake. Let us put the finishing touch to your ring with a precious gem. As I mentioned earlier, if you are a person who uses their hands allot, than a hard wearing stone is the obvious choice. The Mohs scale registers the stones ability to resist abrasion. So at the top we have the diamond, followed by the ruby, sapphire, emerald, topaz, aquamarine, amethyst, garnet and the at the bottom is the opal.

So now that you have shorlisted the style, material and gem you want for your ring all you have to do is visit one of my links and sift through the bargains we have on offer.

Why I Like Classic Car & Cycle People!

While watching the TV news, I was appalled at how many people can't just get along, to quote Rodney King. It is truly a very sad situation. Then I thought about all the different types of people we have at our event and how well they all get along.

In the 18 years we have been doing our events, we have never had any trouble with the participants at our shows. Bikers, Low Riders, Classic Cars, Hot Rodders, Sports Cars types and Tuner owners, they all attend our classic car & cycle show and all of them have a great time. Don't get me wrong, they all have different likes and dislikes, but they are tolerant of their fellow gear heads.

The world could learn a lot from Gear Heads! Learn to appreciate the other person's point of view. Low Riders always draw a crowd when they put their vehicles through their "dance". Now I'm not at all interested in having a car that hops, but I sure can appreciate the work and engineering that goes into allowing thousands of pounds of Chevy to bounce six feet off the ground. I also don't want a car with 1000 horsepower with a blower sticking out of the hood. but I sure do enjoy checking out those types of cars at the car shows.

The way I see it, we are all different and we should revel in these differences not curse them. Diversity makes the world an interesting and fun place to live in. It's a shame that some people feel its either their way or the highway. Whether its religion, politics or drive trains, we all need to love our neighbors and that which makes them unique.

If the world was made of Classic Car and Cycle People, what a wonderful place it would be!

See Ya There!

Ten Reasons To Start Learning Chinese

1. Chinese, is one of the Sino-Tibetan languages, or more accurately it is a group of different dialects of which Mandarin (Putonghua) is one. Taken together there are more native speakers of Chinese than any other language. To put this in perspective there are approximately 915 million speakers of Mandarin (without including any of the other dialects such as Cantonese), compared to Spanish, the fourth most widely spoken language in the world with around 400 million speakers.

2. You dont have to learn Chinese characters to learn to speak Chinese. Pinyin is a method of writing Chinese in the roman alphabet. Hanyu pinyin spells the sound, and includes tone marks to help give the correct pronunciation.

3. Chinese literature. The dialects are not mutually intelligible but the written language is shared between them all. Although you do not need to learn to read Chinese characters to speak the language, by doing so you open the door to an enormously diverse and rich literature. In fact, the earliest record of writing was in Chinese characters although very different in form from modern characters (of which there are many thousand).

3. The Chinese economy is the fastest growing economy in the world, and so in the work environment even speaking a little Chinese will give you a competitive edge, if your company invests in China or is considering doing so.

4. Language and culture are linked and learning something of the Chinese language will help give an appreciation of the cultural heritage of China.

5. China is accessible to the foreign visitor in a way that it has not been in the past and travel to and within China is becoming easier, but to make the most of this opportunity for travel, language at a basic level is important. Mandarin is spoken throughout China.

7. China is becoming increasingly important in the world and may be the dominant economic power in the not so distant future.

8. Food. You can eat in the tourist restaurants in hotels but if you want to see more of China it is more better to try the food and experience the culture in local restaurants.

9. In 2008 the Olympics are being held in Beijing. In 2008 many foreign visitors will descend on China to watch the Olympics. It is an ideal opportunity, if you are lucky enough to be going, to stand out from the crowd by being one of the few who has learnt at least a few words of Mandarin.

10. Like any other language, it is possible to learn a few words and phrases in Mandarin, enough to be polite without spending years in further education. Linguata would help.

Frank Middleton is a freelance author and writes occasional articles for http://www.linguata.com a site with a practical realistic and fast approach to learning words and phrases in a foreign language, using a combination of sophisticated testing and simple games.Pammy Blog81669

Bias-So what else is new?

Have you ever notice how biased the media is? Lets look at the press for the moment. The New York Times is thought to have a liberal bias. How do you go about checking it out to see if its true? What you have to do is take a look at whats being published thats negatively based, and when is it being published.

Lets say Bill Clinton was in office, and something particularly bad happened, but the Times wanted to portray it in the best possible light. No, lets go one step further; lets say they had to portray it in a bad light. When would you publish? You would do it on the day of the week when you had the smallest print cycle. For the Times, theres nothing like the Saturday edition.

Saturday is the day when nobody reads the paper. If you have to print something that you would rather not print, stick it in the Saturday edition. If you have to print something good about a guy you inherently dislike, stick that in the Saturday edition as well. I find it fascinating to take a red heavy duty pen, and just mark up the Saturday editions of the newspapers to see all the news thats fit to print, but especially on Saturday.

You may be aware that the Wall Street Journal recently started printing on Saturday as well, so we have a new kid on the block, and they are part of the game as well. The print media is not only biased due to political orientation, but also financial orientation. Its pretty tough to be very hard on corporate entities that are giving a fortune in advertising on a regular basis to the newspapers.

A perfect example of the hand that feeds the bird concept of publishing is the car industry which spends a fortune on advertising. If you ever look at car magazines they are notoriously biased. If they do a nice write-up on a car, somehow the car company in question manages to have a nice big full page ad (sometimes several pages) very close to the favorable article that was written. Do you think this is coincidental? I dont think so.

The Wall Street Journal recently had a sweeping, long article on Fords problems. How bad are Fords problems? The are partially shutting down at least 10 plants that employ 20,000 plus people for the rest of the year. This will cut 21% of production between the US and Canada. Merry Christmas to those being laid off. They wont have jobs the rest of the year. At the same time, Ford is expanding its operations in China. Ford blames the crisis on higher gasoline prices. What am I missing, isnt every car company in Japan also being effected by higher gasoline prices? Why is it that a management team in the United States can be asleep at the switch and thats okay? They get to blame their problems on situations that they claim no control over. Why is this okay?

The Wall Street Journal was kind enough to write the story about Ford a major advertiser, and put it on page 1 where it belongs. They did Ford the favor however of printing it on a Saturday, when nobody is reading the Journal. Its like this, if you can study whos advertising with whom, you will be able to figure out whos pushing whos buttons. You need to know the real deal, if you are going to make real decisions, about anything.

Lets take Dan Rather the television news reporter. Whether you like Dan Rather or not, you have to respect anyone who has the staying power to last 40 years on television. The man is a survivor. When he did the story on President Bush during the campaign and questioned the Nation Guard Service of the President, I thought he was over the top. Too many years had passed for anyone to truly be able to prove the real deal on that one either way. Rather was attempting to influence a Presidential election because of his timing so close to the election. This is okay, because others have tried to do the same. What was not okay was the man having insufficient proof, or in this case fabricated evidence.

CBS decided to crucify Rather which they have effectively done by firing him (permitted to resign, SURE). If you want proof of how disgusted the suits at CBS were with Rather, think about this one. A special is being done about the career of Dan Rather, a one hour special. CBS is going to air it. When you ask? Its goes like this, if CBS were the equivalent of a Saturday edition of the NY Times, or the Wall Street Journal, when would you air it. Of course you would air the Dan Rather special on Friday night, 9PM labor day weekend, when nobody is watching because they are traveling on a 3 day weekend. Thats bias folks, and welcome to the world of objectivity.

By the way, what comes around goes around. Walter Cronkite was perhaps the finest reporter of his generation. He certainly was the most respected. He was the direct heir of Edward R. Murrow who made CBS the Tiffany network under William Paleys leadership, the founder of CBS. Cronkite retired from the CBS anchor role in 1982. He was promised at the time that he would be brought back to do specials and other programs. Never once did this happen, thanks to Dan Rather who didnt want Cronkite in the limelight. Now its Rathers turn to know what isolation is, like I said, what comes around goes around, and thats bias.

RV Trips Up The Alaskan Highway

If you are living the RV lifestyle, taking interesting road trips is paramount. A trip up the legendary Alaskan Highway is certainly one to take your breath away.

RV Trips Up The Alaskan Highway

The Alaskan Highway is legendary for a variety of reasons. When it was first built, it wasnt so much a beautiful drive as a survivor episode. The trip took you through huge remote areas and relatively small problems could quickly become catastrophes in this wild land. Today, things are much more serene and the trip is long, but undeniably beautiful. More and more people are loading up the RV and taking it on each year.

The Alaskan Highway runs from Dawson Creek, Canada to Fairbanks, Alaska. The total length is officially just over 1,500 miles but you need to travel a couple hundred extra miles when you take into account the drive to the start of the highway and from the end of it into Fairbanks proper. The only significant population area along the trip is Whitehorse in the Yukon.

The Alaskan Highway was started in the 1930s, but it was an odd project. The highway runs primarily through Canadian land, but the government in Canada was not particularly interested in funding it. Why? Well, they argued that it added nothing to Canada since there really were not any major population areas along the route. In truth, this position was correct. Since nobody had much of a counter-argument, the Canadian government put little effort into the project and it more or less wilted away on the vine.

As you know, World War II spurred on massive government projects in the United States. One of the many issues that came up was how to connect air bases located in the upper Yukon area to the continental United States. Since Canada was just leasing the land to the US, it had little interest in putting in roads. After political wrangling, the US Army was charged with essentially building the Alaskan Highway. The Army changed the route slightly to address its goals, but it did complete the construction. In 1943, the route was completed. Following the war, the Canadian government purchased the route and surrounding lands for $123 million, made modifications and opened the route to general traffic in 1947.

If you are considering taking a RV trip up the Alaskan Highway, there are some things you need to know. Caution is the general rule you should live by. The entire route is paved, but some areas are better than others. Ice can be a factor, but it maintenance issues that are the most problematic. Potholes, gravel and dangerous shoulders are not uncommon. Although facilities along the road have increased in number, you will be traveling through very remote areas. Be very careful when driving as help is often not close.

If you want to experience one of the great open expanses of nature left in the world, you could hardly do better than a trip up the Alaskan Highway. Take it slowly and you will have a trip to remember.

Know If Instant Payday Loans Are Right For You

You've seen the ads and have heard the stories. Now, you yourself need extra cash to cover for an emergency expense. Are instant payday loans the best solution for you? We examine what you need to know about these types of loans and whether or not you should turn to them to help solve your temporary cash problems.

What are instant payday loans?

If you're familiar with cash advances, then you have an idea of what instant payday loans are. These are unsecured loans that are available in small amounts, typically ranging from $100 to $1000. Some lenders offer more, especially if you qualify.

If they are unsecured, what do I use for collateral?

Instant payday loans are designed for emergency cash needs, that is why they are available only in smaller amounts. If you need say, $2500, for example, you'll have to find another source for your loan. While you will not be required to provide collateral, most lenders will require you to issue postdated checks, a show of good faith that you will pay back your loan.

What are the benefits of using instant payday loans?

Aside from being one of the easiest forms of loans to get, instant payday loans offer fast, convenient and secure transactions. Application procedures are short and do not require you to produce a lot of documentations. As long as you meet the qualifications, you could receive the money within 24 hours, even earlier.

Are there any disadvantages I should be aware of?

Instant payday loans by their very nature require a little bit of protection for the lenders. That is why borrowers are often charged higher interest rates compared to other types of loans. That makes instant payday loans more expensive. Lenders usually charge you about $15 for every $100 you borrow while other lenders charge as much as $30. That, and the fact that you will have to pay back the loan within a short period of time (usually as short as 14 days), makes instant payday loans a little difficult to handle.

However, you can try to find a lender who can offer you the lowest rates. That way, your loan is a lot easier to pay for and you could save a lot of money in the process. Talk to several lenders first before you make your final decision.

Should I get an instant payday loan?

Instant payday loans are right for you if you only need a small amount of cash for a temporary problem. Instant payday loans should not be used to pay for more regular expenses such as mortgage, groceries or luxuries like clothes and sports equipment. Regular use of these types of loan should be limited and must be resorted to only in real emergency cases.

You should also get an instant payday loan if you can pay back the loan amount and the interest on or before the agreed date. The horror stories you have heard about are people who obtained instant payday loans and were unable to pay them. They had these loans 'rolled over' as a new loan with a higher interest and ended up with a loan amount that is far too big for them to handle efficiently.

A lot of people have been helped by instant payday loans but only because they knew exactly what they were getting into and were prepared to face them. Make sure you understand what is expected of you and you can take advantage of the full benefit of instant payday loans.
